NEMO AHEC is committed to the hands-on training of health professions students through a variety of programs.

PRIMO/AHEC CAREER ENHANCEMENT SCHOLARS PROFESSIONAL (ACES-PRO) PROGRAM

Health professions students who participate in the ACES-Pro program are self-proclaimed primary care champions.  In order to assist in preparing them for future practice in Missouri, NEMO AHEC provides workshops and individualized career enhancement opportunities that promote the care of underserved patients, disease prevention and high quality primary health care delivery.  These students are recognized for their efforts by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services – Primary Care Resource Initiative for Missouri (PRIMO) program and may become eligible for educational financial assistance.

PRIMO was created in 1995 when the DHSS began recognizing the increasing shortage of healthcare providers throughout the state.  PRIMO is a pipeline for recruiting health care providers and developing systems of care.  Financial incentives include “forgiveable loan” and “loan repayment” and are exclusively available to primary care professionals – ACES Pro students are given higher priority as a result of their continued commitment to primary care preparation activities.

ACES-PRO program topics being considered for 2006 include:

            Legal Issues

            Special Needs in Underserved areas

            How to choose a Residency

            Cultural Competency

            Community Health Clinics
