***NOTE: State funding cuts and economic downturn have eliminated funds for conduct of the ACES program for fiscal year July 2009-June 2010. As a result, we will NOT be able to process any of the 2009 applications and the program has been frozen.***
High School Student Success
The ACES/PRIMO program provides comprehensive career planning and year-round support services for students who are preparing for a career in primary healthcare. Through ACES/PRIMO, NEMO AHEC staff work one-on-one with NEMO high school students, their families, and their communities to create a comprehensive pipeline that will help students reach their primary care career goals.
Annual activities revolved around these key principles:
- career exploration
- academic enrichment
- leadership development
Students participate in activities that reinforce their interest in and prepare them for a healthcare career. Components of the program include: events focusing on hands-on activities, academic enrichment, college campus visits, job shadowing of healthcare professionals, and Individual Career Plan compilation where students set goals pertaining to key principles mentioned above. Some past workshops include scrub & suture lab, medical school visits, cadaver lab, college preparation workshops, CPR course, and more. Through job shadowing, students experience the daily trials of healthcare - which sometimes leads to internship opportunities in a variety of primary care settings.
If you would like to assist us in funding restoration, please contact your local legislator, Governor Nixon, and the Department of Health and inform them of your concerns.
